The 57th Hunger Games Arena

The 57th arena was located on a mountaintop plateau.

Daily Temperature: 15° C
Nightly Temperature: -3° C
Main Vegetation: Dwarf pines, mountain scrub, alpine grasses [not adequate food source]
Fauna: Mountain lion, chipmunk [modified sharper teeth], groosling, goat

The cornucopia was stocked with food, water, tents/clothes designed to trap heat, rappelling tools, axes, scythes, knives, and spears.

Bloodbath: The arena was smaller than usual, leading to a bloodier start than usual. The traditional Careers staked claim on the Cornucopia, while lucky remaining tributes retrieved rappelling tools to hide in small caves dotting the sides of the mountaintop. 12 tributes dead. 2 tributes rappelled to caves. 3 climbed down by hand and foot. 2 tributes hid in sparse dwarf pine woods located in center of plateau. 3 tributes fell to their deaths and 9 were killed in hand-to-hand combat.

Strategy: The pair from District 2 had a steady advantage Using their quarry skills from back home, they were able to track down hollow caves directly below the plateau and expertly rappel down to attack hiding tributes. The Career pack hunted for a week, before 2 tributes lured the alliance into a trick cave, sawing the rappelling ropes and killing all but the females from District 2 and District 4.

The end: The male tributes from 6 and 9 along with the female tributes from 2 and 4 were herded to the cliffs by two mountain lions. Tributes from 6 and 9 were previously wounded from chipmunk bites, ultimately leading to their death by hand-to-hand combat. The District 2 female dragged the bleeding and semi-conscious District 4 female off the cliff to the victory trumpets.

Head Canon 086: After the 74th Hunger Games, Haymitch wasn't sure if he was happy he finally had someone to talk to again or devastated that he had to watch two more kinds go through what he does everyday.

Head Canon 085: Cinna wanted to warn Katniss about the rebellion before the Quarter Quell, but Haymitch ultimately held the decision to keep the children out of it. Cinna hoped Katniss would catch on to some of it after the mockingjay dress at the interviews.

Don’t you know, they were having a secret love affair during Mockingjay. Gale fell in love as Prim lovingly ripped the piece of shrapnel out of his shoulder. Gale confessed his trap with the hovercraft after Prim wheedled it out of him with her baby blues. Their love could never be after Prim ran away to the Capitol to stop D13 from blowing up all the children.

Also she died so their love could never be anyway.

Head Canon 083: The poor class of District 1 worked in the factories, mass-producing the cheaper clothes for the Capitol. They could try to make a little money on the side by registering as lab rats for new skin dyes or grafting techniques, but they could never dream of becoming an artisan. Crafting techniques were passed down through the middle and upper classes; the commoners were thought to be "ungifted."

Head Canon 080: After Cressida and Pollux split from Katniss in the Capitol, they headed for Snow's mansion. When Cressida heard the gunshots of the rebels, she pulled a protesting Pollux down into the tunnels again. Cressida and Pollux ran for the City Circle, dodging pods all the way. An unleashed pod of tracker jackers stung Cressida, but Pollux pulled her out in the City Circle before the venom took hold. Cressida hung on to consciousness in time to film the rebel hovercrafts bombing the children, then collapsed as all hell broke loose across the City Circle. When Cressida finally regained consciousness, Plutarch questioned her and destroyed the footage of the rebels attacking children, "for the moral of the Districts."

This one? Peeta had one scar left from the first arena that escaped the full body polish: a raised line on the inside of his cheek from biting down so hard on the berries. He likes to run his tongue across the scar when he feels a hijack attack coming on.

Peeta has a scar on the inside of his cheek because he bit down on those berries super hard because he was about to die and all. The Capitol didn’t erase the scar because they aren’t going inside his nasty ass mouth to poke around for cuts. The scar reminds him of how he got where he is today. It reassures him when he goes through a hijack attack. He’s all, I FEEL THE BERRY SCAR. THIS IS REAL. REAL LIFE.

District 4 had rearranged their alliances years before the 74th Hunger Games. They decided they would continue to train tributes as Careers, because they’d have a way to rebel from inside the Capitol if they remained in good graces.

They didn’t tell the Capitol they started training for rebellion and not the Games. Finnick decided to become one of the first spies undercover as mentor after Annie was reaped. Each District 4 tribute knew they would be signing up as a martyr.

It’s customary for mentors from different Districts to meet up during the Games if their tributes have formed an alliance. Finnick and soon other victors from District 4 were meeting up with the rest of the Districts, sharing transportation information with District 6; food dependency with Districts 9, 10, and 11; factory rebellion with 3, 5, and 8. They gleaned Capitol information off 1 and 2, recruited help from 12, and 7.

During the 74th Games, Haymitch managed to convince Peeta to team up with the Careers. During mentor meetups, Haymitch was able to learn from District 4 that there were rumblings about rebellion breaking out during the Quarter Quell.

In the 74th Games, Anaya, the last tribute from 4, kept trying to signal to Peeta that she was against the Careers as well. She wanted to try to break away from the pack and ally with Peeta alone. Unfortunately, she died in the tracker jacker attack before she could warn Peeta about the brewing rebellion.

Head Canon 077: The interview dress

She’s shining from the shoulders down. Precious jewels flash in the filming lights, stenciled flames snaking their way down her tense shoulders glitter under the harsh Capitol lights. The tips of her hair grazing the small of her back seem to be ignited in painted colors. She’s radiant.

But she isn’t beautiful. Not like she is back home, on those rare moments when she passes her hunting friend at school, on the early mornings I see her sneaking down the Seam for the woods.

Her frown is deeper than usual, her eyebrows knitted down in worry. She keeps bringing her fingers to her mouth, then pulling them away furiously before she can bite the shimmering flames off her fingertips. She shifts from heel to heel, trying to steady herself on locked knees.

Katniss can’t be beautiful here. Not where the Capitol has touched her; not painted for display. I don’t want to call attention to her artificial glimmer. I don’t want the grotesque faces of the Capitol citizens to clamor over her body, I want them to sponsor her for her will to survive.

But Haymitch says this is the best bet for us. For her. I’m going to tell the world I love Katniss Everdeen, and I hope the world doesn’t crash over us.

Head Canon 076: District 4 got the bulk of their fish from aquatic farms, since the pollution and over-fishing from centuries ago still affect 4's coast. Usually the fish were gathered from the farms using nets, but sometimes the more wealthy in the District would spear fish for sport. Finnick, fiercely competitive from a young age, learned how to spear with a trident in order to win a bet against another tribute-in-training.

On the way from lunch to the weekly Panem lecture, he decided to pull Katniss aside and ask her if she wanted to help him frost the cakes the next day. As Peeta walked closer, the girl with the braid smiled unexpectedly, brushing hands with the older Seam boy that all the girls followed around. Peeta dropped his eyes and hurried away.

You guys this book is what I imagine as the prequel to The Hunger Games. If you love THG, you’d love this.

The US is in the process of getting swallowed by the sea, the government is falling apart, cities are crumbling, murder and stealing plagues the towns. Exactly what I pictured Panem to come out of.

It’s about an 18-year-old girl in a post-apocalyptic world. She lives in a gated-in community where everyone inside is scared to venture out into a world filled with the starving, desperate, homeless people who kill, steal, torture, and rape just to survive. But Lauren ventures outside the walls to learn how to shoot and survive on her own. She’s trying to convince people to run away with her, but everyone is too scared to leave the facade of safety and survive in a world crawling with the worst of mankind. Sound familiar?

There’s a lot about gathering food and supplies to live through each day, one of the aspects I really liked about Katniss’s time in the arena. The main character also ends up choosing the weaker-looking allies and braving it against bigger and tougher opponents, just like Katniss and Rue.

This book has a LOT of violence, be warned. There’s graphic details about torture and death (the main character often stumbles upon bloody limbs or wild dogs eating children), rape, cannibalism, drug use…everything wrong with humanity that can go wrong.

The characters have to struggle through each day, deciding if killing and stealing from others is worth the small safety it brings them.

Definitely look into it if you loved THG!

Head Canon 072: Airing the Games to all the Districts 24/7 means extra hours at the power plants in District 5. Some complain but most see it as a veiled gift to avoid watching children murdered.
